Transcription levels
Recordings are transcribed using different levels of verbatim. We will
discuss this with you when you book your transcription job. In summary, the
three levels are:
 |
Complete Verbatim – used in court, police and
other legal work; also for analytical purposes in university research.
This level of transcription is the most time-consuming and includes
everything that is heard: false starts, stutters, interjections and
repeated words and phrases such as ‘you know’ and ‘kind of’; all
non-verbal sounds such as ‘uh’, ‘um’; coughs, laughs, pauses, and noting
when people enter or leave the room. |
| |
|
 |
Intelligent Verbatim – used in general research
interviews and focus groups.
Eliminates all non-verbal sounds and stutters, interjections and
repeated words and phrases such as ‘you know’ and ‘kind of’. It may
include false starts if they have a bearing on what is being said. |
| |
|
 |
Edited Transcripts – often used for lectures and
focus groups where the transcript is still an accurate account of what
was said, but eliminates all the idiosyncratic speech, incomplete
sentences, and irrelevancies. |
